A purchase order calls for high-strength studs on offshore pressure equipment, but it identifies only a base material grade. The material may meet its ASTM mechanical requirements and still fail the equipment manufacturer's requirements for qualification, traceability, testing, or manufacturing controls.

A familiar material designation does not answer every procurement question. ASTM A193 Grade B7 studs, for example, are widely used for pressure joints. A purchase order that asks only for B7 establishes important chemistry, heat-treatment, and mechanical requirements, but it does not automatically invoke API 20E manufacturing controls or a particular BSL.

Likewise, specifying a nickel alloy does not by itself make the finished fastener API 20F compliant. The manufacturer must process and document the product according to the invoked specification and level.

What API 20E Bolting Covers

Purchasers should still verify the governing product specification because API 20E is not a blanket requirement for every fastener installed at an oil and gas facility.

What API 20F Bolting Covers

API Specification 20F addresses corrosion-resistant bolting for petroleum and natural gas service. These fasteners may be selected for offshore, subsea, sour, chloride-bearing, or other environments where corrosion behavior influences material choice.

“Corrosion resistant” should not be read as “immune to corrosion.” Alloy performance depends on environment, temperature, stress, fabrication history, galvanic coupling, exposure time, and installation conditions. A material that performs well in one seawater application may be unsuitable for another service involving hydrogen sulfide, high temperature, or cathodic protection.

API 20F therefore cannot replace the engineering work used to select an alloy. It controls the manufacture and qualification of bolting after the required material system has been established by the equipment designer or purchaser.

Unapproved processing can change both strength and resistance to environmental cracking. Repairing a dimensional problem by uncontrolled thermal or mechanical processing is especially risky.

Bolting Specification Levels (BSL-1, BSL-2, and BSL-3) define graduated technical and quality requirements. The purchaser must state the appropriate level when required by the specification and governing equipment documents.

A higher BSL introduces more demanding qualification, testing, inspection, micro-hardness examination, heat lot traceability, or documentation obligations. It should not be selected from habit.   • Can every finished item or controlled lot be traced directly to its source material heat?
  • Were required manufacturing and special heat treatment processes performed by approved sources?
  • Do the reported mechanical and NDE tests match the ordered size, material, BSL level, and API edition?
  • Are exceptions, substitutions, and concessions documented and formally approved?

Consider an offshore valve package with two bolted connections. Connection A is a topside pipeline flange in a controlled, non-sour process area. The drawing calls for ASTM A193 Grade B7 studs and ASTM A194 Grade 2H nuts. Connection B is part of a subsea assembly exposed to seawater and cathodic protection, with a corrosion-resistant alloy identified by the materials engineer.

For Connection A, the carbon and alloy steel material family points toward API 20E if the valve specification or operator requires API-qualified bolting. The buyer must confirm BSL level, dimensions, coating system, testing, and documentation.
