Where ASTM A193 B7 Stud Bolts Are Used

The official ASTM A193/A193M specification governs the bolting material, heat treatment, mechanical requirements, testing, and marking. It does not independently define every finished fastener dimension or determine whether B7 is suitable for a particular process fluid.
Grade B7 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel, commonly produced from AISI 4140, 4142, or an equivalent composition permitted by the specification. The material is quenched and tempered to develop high tensile and yield strength.
Common applications include pressure vessel closures, valve bodies, heat exchangers, piping flanges, refinery equipment, compressors, turbines, and other joints exposed to significant pressure or temperature. ASTM A193 B7 Properties & Heat Treatment
The defining treatment for Grade B7 is quenching and tempering. Heat treatment produces a combination of strength, ductility, and hardness suitable for heavily loaded bolted joints. A material test report should identify the applicable heat and show results against the specification edition stated by the purchaser.
For B7 bolting up to and including 2-1/2 inches in diameter, commonly referenced minimum room-temperature properties include 125 ksi tensile strength and 105 ksi yield strength. Requirements change for larger diameters, so those values must not be copied onto every B7 order without checking the governing edition.
The maximum hardness commonly associated with B7 is 35 HRC. Hardness matters because excessive hardness can indicate improper heat treatment and may increase susceptibility to environmental cracking in certain services. A passing tensile result does not cancel a failing hardness result.

How to Specify B7 Stud Dimensions & Threads
“B7 stud” describes a material grade, not a complete part. A usable description includes configuration, diameter, thread pitch, thread class, overall length, end treatment, and any dimensional standard that applies.
All-thread studs are common in flange joints because a nut can be installed at each end. Tap-end studs have a short threaded end designed to engage a tapped hole and a nut end for external tightening. For diameters of 1 inch and above, 8UN threads are frequently specified for pressure bolting. The constant eight threads per inch simplify thread selection across several larger diameters, but 8UN is not automatic. Some equipment drawings require UNC, UNF, metric, or proprietary threads.
Why ASTM A194 2H Nuts Are Paired with B7 Studs
ASTM A194 Grade 2H heavy hex nuts are a common companion to B7 studs because their heat treatment and mechanical requirements are intended to support highly loaded pressure bolting. The ASTM A194/A194M specification addresses nuts for high-pressure or high-temperature service, or both.
Grade 2H is a quenched and tempered carbon-steel nut grade. It should not be described as B7 material. The stud and nut come from different ASTM specifications, have different chemistry requirements, and use different acceptance tests.

Selecting Coatings for ASTM A193 B7 Stud Bolts
Uncoated B7 alloy steel has limited atmospheric corrosion resistance. A coating or finish may be necessary, but corrosion protection cannot be selected apart from operating temperature and assembly friction.
Electroplated coatings require review for hydrogen embrittlement risk. In our worked refinery example, the request for zinc plating conflicts with the 650°F service temperature (since zinc degrades rapidly above 392°F / 200°C). Plain high-temperature assemblies with qualified lubricants or specialized PTFE/cadmium systems must be specified instead.
Testing ASTM A193 B7 Studs & 2H Nuts
Testing should answer three separate questions: Is the material the specified grade? Was it processed correctly? Does the finished component conform dimensionally? A chemistry report alone cannot answer all three.
Grade 2H nuts have their own testing rules. Proof-load testing verifies the nut’s ability to sustain a specified axial load without thread stripping or prohibited deformation. Results for studs should never be presented as evidence that nuts comply.
